An Aesop's Fable



The Hare was once gloating of his rate before alternate creatures. "I have never yet been beaten," said he, "when I set forth my full speed. I challenge any one here to race with me."

The Tortoise said unobtrusively, "I acknowledge your test."

"That is a decent joke," said the Hare; "I could move round all of you the way."

"Keep your gloating till you've beaten," addressed the Tortoise. "Might we race?"

So a course was settled and a begin was made. The Hare dashed verging on outside of anyone's ability to see without a moment's delay, yet soon ceased and, to demonstrate his scorn for the Tortoise, set down to have a rest. The Tortoise trudged on and trudged on, and when the Hare got up from his snooze, he saw the Tortoise simply close to the triumphant post and couldn't keep running up so as to spare the race. At that point said the Tortoise:
