The Frogs Seeking a King

The Frogs  Seeking a King
An Aesop's Fable

The Frogs were living as glad as could be in a boggy bog that simply suited them; they went sprinkling about looking after no one and no one messing with them. In any case, some of them believed this was wrong, that they ought to have a lord and a legitimate constitution, so they resolved to send up a request to Jove to give them what they needed. "Relentless Jove," they cried, "send unto us a ruler that will run over us and keep us all together." Jove giggled at their croaking, and tossed down into the bog a colossal Log, which descended sprinkling into the marsh. The Frogs were alarmed out of their lives by the uproar made in their middle, and all hurried to the bank to take a gander at the repulsive beast; yet after a period, seeing that it didn't move, maybe a couple of the boldest of them wandered out towards the Log, and even set out to touch it; still it didn't move. At that point the best saint of the Frogs hopped upon the Log and initiated moving all over upon it, immediately all the Frogs came and did likewise; and for quite a while the Frogs continued on ahead consistently without taking the scarcest notification of their new King Log lying in their middle. However, this sometimes fell short for them, so they sent another appeal to Jove, and said to him, "We need a genuine lord; one that will truly run over us." Now this made Jove irate, so he sent among them a major Stork that soon set to work eating every one of them up. At that point the Frogs atoned when past the point of no return.
