The Fox, the Cock, and the Dog

The Fox, the Cock, and the Dog

An Aesop's Fable

One moonlight night a Fox was sneaking around an agriculturist's hen-coop, and saw a Cock perching high up past his scope.

"Uplifting news, uplifting news!" he cried.

"Why, what is that?" said the Cock.

"Ruler Lion has proclaimed an all inclusive ceasefire. No monster may hurt a winged animal from this time forward, yet all might abide together in kindly companionship."

"Why, that is uplifting news," said the Cock; "and there I see somebody coming, with whom we can share the great news." And so saying he stretched out his neck forward and looked far off.

"What is it you see?" said the Fox.

"It is just my lord's Dog that is coming towards us. What, going so soon?" he proceeded, as the Fox started to dismiss when he had heard the news. "Will you not stop and salute the Dog on the rule of general peace?"

"I would readily do as such," said the Fox, "however I fear he might not have known about King Lion's pronouncement."
